Danyal Salmon's tragic accident and recovery plan

Our very active and well loved friend has taken a big hit with a serious surfing neck injury and has no medical or other policies in place. He is probably going to need long term care and financial support - first in ICU for about 6 weeks, then in a rehab facility for a few months and continuing with family and hopefully eventually on his own again. For everybody that has asked how they can help, here's what you can do:

1. Visiting him in hospital - Sign up at this link for when best to see him in the next couple of weeks so we don't overlap and ensure someone is always there at visiting hours https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1wSw4k3FlSAtXgIZkfk8lFv5yyuhQEsRW3XFb93md7to/edit?usp=sharing
(Please note there are two tabs on the spread sheet - please read the introduction as we are filtering the information Danyal has about his condition)

2. Financial support - Here si breakdown of Dan's expences now that he is at home. Your time is as important, particularly regular visits in the evenings after 6 when his care wokrer leaves and I'd like to get out a bit.

We will provide updates on Danyal's progress on this blog, so please subscribe if you want keep posted.

  1. Danyal is taking more food and drink today and was joking with mates and swearing at me for hurting him while massaging his hands. He is breathing deeper though still with assistance.

  4. OMG, Dan just started speaking again after they inverted him and removed the breathing assistance for a while. They also have him of the feeding tube. This is such a great relief as he was really uncomfortable.

    1. Thank you so much Nick, we are really grateful that Dan \defied the odds. In terms of something you could do; the lady who gave Danyal CPR left me a message that there was no oxygen nor mouth attachment on the beach when she asked for it. could you please follow up and make sure that such things get stocked. Could have turned out lot worse if the ambulance didn't arrive so quickly.

  10. Danyal has started eating solids and is spending more time off the breathing assistance. he has more movement coming to his wrists. he is getting yoga instructions from BRAVE on improving breathing, diet, meditation and massage. We are hoping to get him into a private rehabilitation facility rather than the state one. since its probably for a good couple of months, we are really grateful for your donations so far, every little bit helps.

  11. Danyal Has been moved to ward D15 from C27. Whilst this is a relief he has also had the doctors show him the x-rays of the significant extent of his injuries and strong likelihood of not being able to walk, so he is likely to be quite distraught for the time being. Keep thinking positive and focusing on that with him, miracles do happen.

  13. Danyal has finally had his trachioscopy removed and is spending more time in a wheel chair each day. He moving to the rehab/physoio facility in Mitchels Plein soon and there he can get better assistance to regain movement. His mom visited the clinic and it looks amazing.

  14. Sorry for the long Hiatus, we have been using Whatsapp groups to keep people in the loop. Danyal is coming out of rehab to stay with me Tomorrow after 5 months of being institutionalised. We will let him settle in for the weekend, but it should be a lot easier to come vist now that he is in Observatory. We have gotten a care worker to to come help him get out and about in the mornings and evenings and we have a domestic to help him during the day. We can now focus more on tweaking his diet and adding some alternative therapies like accupuncture and inversion tables. He is gettign stronger slowly but surely.

  15. So Dan is settling in nicely in Observatory and keeping really busy with his recovery, including yoga classes twice a week, all kinds of interesting high tech biokinetics at the sports science institute, acupuncture, massage, physio and his own resistance training and meditation at home. There is possibility of stem cell therapy in September and also of hand surgery in November. He is sleeping through most nights and not needing to be turned all the time which is great for me but he is struggling a bit with shoulder pain and cold sweats indicating he may need to take it a bit more easy. Planning a get together in late August.

  16. also added a screenshot of some of Dan's expenses since some of his friends and family wanted to know how they could help. Committing to regular visits would also be good for both our moral. xx
